Turmeric

Khansland Turmeric is organically grown and offered as whole dried rhizomes or freshly ground powder, delivering an intensely vibrant golden colour and a warm, slightly bitter, earthy flavour that is the cornerstone of all Bangladeshi cooking. The active compound curcumin is responsible for the spice's colour, its flavour, and the extensive body of research into its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Our organically grown turmeric contains significantly higher curcumin levels than commercially available turmeric grown with synthetic fertilisers.

In cooking, turmeric performs multiple roles simultaneously: it provides the characteristic golden colour of Bengali curries, contributes a warm background flavour that supports and unifies the other spices, and acts as a natural antimicrobial in marinades. It is always the first spice added to hot oil in a Bengali tempering, blooming in the heat to release its colour and flavour before other ingredients are added.

Our whole turmeric rhizomes are excellent for making fresh turmeric paste — far more potent and aromatic than dried powder — by simply grating or blending with a small amount of water. Fresh turmeric paste is particularly valued in fish marinades and the preparation of traditional golden milk for its superior bioavailability and flavour.
