Chutney

Khansland Chutney is a range of traditional Bangladeshi chatni preparations — the category of sweet-sour-spiced condiments that occupy a unique position in Bengali meal structure, serving simultaneously as a palate cleanser, a sweet contrast to savoury main courses, and a final flavour note that brings the meal to a satisfying conclusion. Traditional Bengali chatni is fundamentally different from the strong, thickly spiced chutneys of other South Asian traditions — it is typically smooth, relatively sweet, and used in small quantities as an elegant condiment.

Our chutney range includes the principal Bengali varieties: tamarind chatni — the dark, intensely sour-sweet standard condiment for fried snacks; tomato chatni — a slightly cooked, spiced fresh preparation with a bright, tangy character; raw mango chatni — sharply sour with a clean green fruit flavour; and date-jaggery chatni — the richest, most complex variety with a deep, wine-like sweetness from date palm jaggery.

Each variety is prepared using traditional techniques that emphasise balance: the sweetness should not overwhelm the sourness, the spice should be present but not dominant, and the texture should be smooth enough to coat foods without being watery. Our chutneys are made in small batches without any synthetic preservatives, using only traditional preservation methods including sugar concentration and acidification.
