Chinigura Rice

Khansland Chinigura Rice is a small aromatic heirloom variety with centuries of cultivation history in the Dinajpur region, celebrated as one of the finest scented rice varieties in the subcontinent. Its name derives from the Bengali word for sugar, reflecting the characteristic sweet, delicate fragrance that the cooked grain releases — a clean, floral aroma quite different from the more intense fragrance of Kalijira.

The grain is small and rounded, cooking to a soft, lightly sticky, tender consistency with a subtle sweetness. It produces outstanding payesh when simmered slowly in whole milk with cardamom and date palm jaggery. For Eid zarda — sweet saffron rice — Chinigura is the traditional choice because its soft grain accepts colouring and perfume beautifully.

Chinigura is the rice traditionally offered at festivals, religious gatherings, and as a gift of respect. Its premium quality and limited production make it a symbol of care and generosity when presented to guests or elders. Many Bangladeshi families keep Chinigura specifically for Eid payesh and special occasions, considering it an essential part of the celebration.
