Bottle Gourd

Khansland Bottle Gourd is organically grown deshi lau — traditional Bangladeshi varieties with smooth pale green skin and mild, clean white flesh that cooks to a delicately soft, slightly silky consistency with a gentle, neutral sweetness. Its high water content — approximately 92% by weight — makes it an extraordinarily cooling and hydrating vegetable, valued in traditional wellness practice for its cooling properties during hot weather and its mild, easily digestible character suitable for all ages.

Bottle gourd's mild, neutral flavour profile means it acts as a flavour sponge that absorbs and reflects whatever spices and aromatics it is cooked with, producing dishes of remarkable variety despite the vegetable's consistent character. Simmered with mustard seeds, green chili, and coconut; slow-cooked with garlic, cumin, and dried red chili; or cooked with green onion, ginger, and black pepper — each version tastes entirely different.

In traditional Bengali cooking, lau plays several important roles. Lau chingri — bottle gourd with prawns — is one of the most beloved of all Bengali vegetable-seafood combinations, where the gourd's neutral sweetness provides the perfect background for the bright, oceanic flavour of fresh prawns.
